SEAPA Heads to Alaska: First Stop for the Global Team in 2025

Erik Schlagenhauf SEAPA USA

Erik Schlagenhauf | SEAPA USA

SEAPA USA’s global journey in 2025 begins in Alaska!

From February 18–20, Erik Schlagenhauf from SEAPA USA will attend and present at the Mariculture Conference at Harrigan Centennial Hall in Sitka. Lucas Sawyer, nursery manager with Hog Island Oyster Co. and long-time SEAPA customer, will join Erik at the conference.

As the largest gathering of mariculture participants and enthusiasts in Alaska, the conference will also host the annual meetings of the Alaska Mariculture Alliance and the Alaska Shellfish Growers Association.

Erik will showcase a wide range of SEAPA products appropriate for Alaskan shellfish farmers, including the innovative REVO Surface Drying System. This innovative solution is particularly valuable for oyster farmers in Alaska’s waters, as the baskets can easily be removed, switched out, or relayed to other growing areas, providing added versatility and security.

Lucas Sawyer will deliver a presentation titled “Resilience in Mariculture,” focusing on the impact of reliable oyster seed and efficient farming gear in driving industry growth. A seasoned mariculture expert, Lucas will share best practices in breeding programs, seed cultivation, and equipment selection. Drawing on his extensive experience, he will explore scalable production methods and durable, labor-efficient tools that empower farmers to improve yields, reduce labor demands, and promote sustainability.

Lucas will also discuss the unique environmental and operational challenges faced by oyster farmers on the U.S. West Coast and in Alaska. These include the critical need for dependable seed sources and innovative solutions like Floating Upwelling Systems (FLUPSYs). He will highlight how SEAPA’s advanced oyster farming equipment supports resilience, productivity, and growth in these evolving markets.

Attendees can expect to gain valuable insights into the techniques and resources driving Alaska’s mariculture industry forward, with practical takeaways applicable to diverse farming operations.

This conference marks the year’s first event for the SEAPA USA team, with AquaCulture America in New Orleans on 6 – 10 March 2025, Boston Seafood Show from 16 – 18 March 2025, Oyster South Conference from 20 – 22 March 2025 in St Augustine, Florida, and North Carolina Aquaculture conference in Morehead on 27 – 28 March 2025.
